GoldieBlox is a company designing toys to inspire the future generation of female engineers.
Aimed at children between 5 to 9 years old, GoldieBlox is a set construction toys set to an adventure narrative. The product taps into young girls’ interest in storytelling and problem solving as an introduction to the field of engineering. Founder Debbie Sterling hopes to increase female representation in the engineering industry and disrupt the gender stereotypes enforced by the toy store “pink aisle”. They toys are based on Sterling’s research in cognitive development, children’s play patterns, and interviews with parents, educators, neuroscientists and STEM experts
Currently available sets include “GoldieBlox and the Spinning Machine” which explores wheels and axles, force, friction and tension to build a belt drive machine and “GoldieBlox and the Parade Float” which introduces wheels and axles, gear action and vehicle design.
Goldie Blox was launched from a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, during which 18,000 toys were pre-ordered.
