Everyone who works downtown in Oakland loves to walk over to Old Oakland at lunch or after work–the restaurants, cafes, small retail shops and streetscapes are lovely and unique. But starting in mid-June, Old Oakland’s going to be home to the West Coast corporate headquarters of EyesLipsFace, aka ELF Cosmetics, a cutting-edge cosmetics company that has leased space in the Le Cheval building on Clay Street between 10th and 11th Street.
According to Erin Daley, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for ELF, the company’s move into Oakland is part of a plan to rapidly expand the business from its current distribution in big box stores and 2 New York-area retail stores and is driven, in part, by the company’s development of a West Coast management team. “We’re looking to expand our business,” said Daley, “and Oakland seemed like a terrific place to locate–there’s a feeling of creativity that matches our values.”
Daley is also excited about the new space, which is being renovated to their specs, with much of the original brick and timber feeling restored. Knowing that they wanted to locate in Oakland, Daley and her realtor, Cynthia Lee of Turley Cassidy, looked at several open spaces, but the ability to take a good amount of space and renovate it to spec was a deciding factor in going for the Old Oakland spot.
For Cynthia Lee, the Cassidy Turley realtor, ELF’s lease underscores that business is seeing downtown Oakland in a new light. “It’s not only the price of space compared to San Francisco,” Lee explains. “The word is out that Oakland is a great place to have a bite to eat and bike around–and we have buildings with amenities that tenants want–including some gorgeous older buildings that aren’t available in San Francisco anymore. We have some unique buildings in Oakland that are just really appealing.”
